Before you first light or relight your candle, be sure to use a wick trimmer to trim the wick to ¼ of an inch. If the wick is too long, the flame will grow to be dangerously high, this could also cause your candle to burn faster than you’d like. If the wick is too short, the melted wax pool surrounding the flame will extinguish it, making it hard to burn and causing tunneling.
If you cut your wick too short, simply use a blow dryer on high heat with fan low to melt the first layer of wax just enough to get a small pool, then pour the melted wax into the trash. This will give your wick enough room to get a good burn and continue the life of your candle.
Tip #2: Let your candle burn!
Not letting your candle burn long enough will shorten the life of it. A candle must burn one hour for every diameter of the jar. Standard sized candles like ours have a three inch diameter, therefore, you should allow it to burn for at least three hours each time you light it. Doing this will prevent tunneling and allow the maximum scent throw to fill the room.
Tip #3: Keep the wax clean.
Keeping the wax clean is an important part of the candle care process. After using your candle a few times, wick debris can accumulate on the surface of the wax and should be removed as soon as you notice.
