Overcoming Negative Emotions: Fear

Overcoming Negative Emotions: Fear

We often hear our favorite motivational speakers chant the mantra “face your fears!”

They tell you to put your fears behind you and keep going no matter what comes. That's the only way to succeed.

And although this idea holds some truth, it serves as a temporary fix. Something that makes you feel good at that moment then quickly fades away when it's time to move forward in the world.

What's the real solution to overcoming fear?

Being able to reluctantly push through fear may be doable, but wouldn't it be more productive to have no negative effects due to fear?

What is fear?

fear \ ˈfir \
1: a: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger
b: (1): an instance of this emotion (2): a state marked by this emotion
2: anxious concern
3: profound reverence and awe especially toward God
4: a reason for alarm

I always love to include definitions because oftentimes, we hear these words and assume we know what they mean simply because we may have experienced them.

However, if you do not know the true meaning of a word or in this case, emotion, how will you ever understand the root of why you experience it?

Words and their meanings matter.

Overcoming

Understanding the root of your fear allows you to embrace it.

Although fear is viewed as negative, it can be used as a tool to help us to make better decisions.

When you attempt to ignore the fact that something scares you, the negative energy towards it simply grows.

For example, I've always had this fear of having to speak rather it be in small or big spaces.

The thought of judgment laid heavy on me.

I realized I cared about what people think of me but not in a constructive criticism way. I lacked confidence. As such I chose friends who didn't challenge me to grow.

Persons like myself who refused to face their fears became my companions. I believe it made me feel comfortable. No challenge, no growth, just stagnant and in many cases declining.

I allowed fear to back me into a corner.

I eventually decided to look my fears in the eyes and realize it's a necessary evil.

Fear introduced me to the courage I needed to create the life I want.

Moving forward in this manner is not as easy as it sounds in this blog, however, it is very achievable.

You must decide that you no longer will allow the emotion of fear to control you. Rather you control your emotions and use fear as a tool to thrive in situations you once struggled in.

Fear is most birth in the unknown. Educate yourself on the things you want to do in life. The more you know, the more confident you will feel in completing a task.

I look forward to seeing you on the path of confidence. It's gonna look so good on you.
