Good Candle, Bad Candle

Good Candle, Bad Candle

Imagine coming home to your favorite candle after a long day.
Hints of Jasmine, blends of citrus, or notes of musk and Amyris. So many scents to choose from! But if you look closely, all candles are not created equal.
It's all about that wax.
Like scents, there are a variety of waxes to choose from.
Chè Lux only uses the best. Vegan coconut wax along with clean fragrance oils free from carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other potentially hazardous chemicals.
You may be asking yourself isn't it just a candle? The short answer is NO!

What's the Difference?

Paraffin wax, also known as petroleum wax, is a soft colorless solid derived from petroleum, coal, or oil shale that consists of a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules containing between twenty and forty carbon atoms.
Doesn't it sound completely unsafe? It is. Furthermore, how can these huge corporations sell this type of candle knowing it's a toxic product?
And then it clicked -- money. Paraffin wax is the most inexpensive wax option although it can hold a high amount of fragrance and color.
People love candles with a great smell and bright colors, so this is their selling point. Even if it's not good for their customer's health.
Believe it or not, it's science. When a paraffin wax candle burns, it releases a gas that contains harmful chemicals. It fills your home with pollutants that can attack your lungs and even enter your bloodstream. These substances have been said to cause some cancers.
Soy wax is a natural wax made of the vegetable soybeans. Soybeans are one of the major agricultural crops grown in the United States. After the beans are harvested, they are then cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. Finally, soybean oil is extracted from the flakes.
Soy wax candles seem to be a better option in comparison to paraffin, however, it's just as bad for you and the earth.
Soybean crop farms need large amounts of acid-neutralizing lime, as well as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. All of which creates an environmental hazard.
Toxic chemicals from soy production contaminate the forests, poison rivers, destroy wildlife, and may be linked to birth defects in humans.
Soy candles look and smell decent but it is far from the best option.
and then there is Coconut Wax...
Coconut wax is a colorless and odorless wax made from the cold-pressed meat of the coconut. It is organic, environmentally friendly to produce, and free of pesticides.
It is considered to be the best and healthiest type of wax because it emits no smoke and produces less soot.

At Chè Lux Boutique we produce our candles with a phthalate free coconut wax blend. Our wax is predominately coconut, a small amount of non GMO soy, and less than 1% FDA approved, food grade, eco-paraffin.

Now why would we use a blend when I just told you about the horrors of soy and paraffin?

That's because the soy is non GMO and the paraffin contained in our wax has been 100% refined and extracted from all impurities.

It would be great if everyone could use these types of materials but they are usually is a bit more more expensive. However, we don't mind paying to produce cleaner, safer products.

This blend also allows you to enjoy your candles longer because this wax burns slower than other wax. If it were coconut alone, the candle wouldn't harden and wouldn't make for a good candle.

Now, you have some insight to understand the pros and cons of choosing quality candle options for your home and loved ones.
